Obituary for George Strachan

George Strachan of Minto Township passed away at Louise Marshall Hospital, Mount Forest, on Sunday, October 23, 2022, in his 89th year.

Much loved husband of Agnes (Gammie) Strachan for almost 65 years.

Loving father of Patricia Strachan & Rob Robson of Dundas, Brenda & Dave Holliday of Mount Forest, and Ian & Amy Strachan of Elora. Cherished grandfather of Ryan (Caroline), Ben (Sarah), Leah (Jay), Graham, Alex (Candace), and Andrew, and predeceased by his grandson, Matthew.

Dearly missed by his great-grandchildren, Shae, Callum, Louie, Adrienne, Mya, Max, Emersyn, and Lilly.

Beloved brother of Joy Murray of England, and predeceased by sister Evelyn Mackenzie and brother Harvey Strachan, both of Scotland.

George will be missed by his extended Gammie and Strachan families in Scotland, England and Australia.

George was born on October 12, 1934 in the northeast of Scotland. His strength and resilience through hard times in childhood served him well all his life. In 1955 he left for Canada, seeking a better life. Many adventures followed, including marriage in 1958 to his dancing partner Agnes. After five idyllic years in Kelowna B.C., they sought new adventures in Ontario. Here they purchased a farm where they would live for the next 58 years.

George loved his family, his farm, the land, his community and his adopted country. He was an active member in many farm organizations and at Knox-Calvin Presbyterian Church in Harriston. He was a friend and advocate for many and touched many lives.

His last words for us all: “have a little fun while you can!”

Visitation will be held at the Hardy-Lee Funeral Home, Harriston on Thursday from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. with a private family service to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Louise Marshall Hospital or the Canadian Cancer Society.
