Obituary for Gordon Speers

Wm. Gordon Speers, of Allan Park, and formerly of Palmerston, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, September 27, 2021 at the age of 92 years.

Husband of the late Brunhilde (Schoen) Speers.

Loving father of Mareena Speers and Wayne Zimmerman of Hanover, Sherll-Anne Speers and Mark Reid of Hanover, and Brunie Speers of Hanover, and father-in-law of Colleen Wagner of Stayner. Dearest grandfather of Robert, Evan, Alexes, Dakota, Jarrett, and Lucas.

Brother-in-law of June Stewart, and stepbrother of Jean Hoffmann.

Predeceased by his parents Wesley and Clarissa (Cowan) Speers, son Reinhardt Wagner (2020), daughter Martha Speers (2021), sister Eleanor Taylor, and brothers Franklin, Alex, John, and James Speers.

Gordon was born at home, on Lot 10, Concession 10 of Wallace Township, Ontario. He attended Public School at SS#9 Wallace Township, and graduated from High School in Palmerston. For two years Gordon worked in Toronto at Simpsons.

From 1950 to 1957, Gordon joined the 405 Squadron of RCAF as a flying officer. After leaving RCAF, he continued to enjoy flying for several years (until he was 90 years old) in his 1946 Aeronca Champion plane.

In 1959, the Speers brothers, John and Gordon, started into the business of raising turkeys for approximately 25 years, outside of Palmerston. They also raised cattle and had cash crops. Gordon and his family lived on the old Kells/Speers farm (Century Farm) until 1994. After his retirement, Gordon and his family moved to Neustadt then to Allan Park.

Gordon was a member of the Blair Masonic Lodge, Palmerston, Shriner’s, and the Eastern Star, Palmerston United Church, and an avid stamp collector with Saugeen Stamp Club.

Visitation will be held at Hardy-Lee Funeral Home, Harriston, on Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., where a private family funeral service will be held on Friday, October 1, 2021 at 1:30 p.m. Wendy Smith officiating. The funeral will be live-streamed, and we ask you to watch safely from your home.
