Obituary for Walter Demerling

Walter Robert Demerling of R.R.3, Mildmay passed away on Friday, December 10, 2021, in his 88th year.

Husband of E. Fay (Wright) Demerling. Father of Nancy and Randy Seip of Clifford, and Andrew and Adrienne Demerling of Bracbridge, and father-in-law of Mary Demerling of Bracebridge.

Grandfather of Andrew and Brittany Keith, Jonathan and Susan Seip, Elizabeth and Justin Howatt, Josh Demerling, and Jeremy Demerling, and great-grandfather of 8.

Brother of Jim and June Demerling of Mitchell, Audrey Tozer of New Brunswick, and Bill and Bev Demerling of Crawford.

Predeceased by his son David Demerling, sister Greta Harkness and her husband Bob, and by his brother-in-law Bob Tozer.

Walter was born at home on April 27, 1934 in Howick Township to Harvey and Hilda (Miller) Demerling. He went to school at the Orangehill school until the age of 14 when he decided to work on the home farm. In 1952, he met the love of his life, Fay, while doing work at her parents’ home. During the next 5 years, he apprenticed as a farm machinery mechanic while Fay pursued nursing.

They married on September 6, 1958, and moved on to the family home farm where they were blessed with 3 children. For many years, he worked with his father in the farm machinery trade. Other careers were truck driving and truck mechanic for Muskoka Transport. Fay and Walter moved back to the area in 1980 and opened their Auto mechanic shop in Lakelet.

Alongside Fay, Walter was a campground director at Cedar Rail Camp and Driftwood Beach Park for many years. He enjoyed hunting, repairing bicycles, camping, curling, and travelling.

Visitation will be held at the Hardy-Lee Funeral Home, Harriston on Tuesday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Clifford on Wednesday, December 15 at 1:30 p.m. Pastor Jody Rinas officiating.
